Borders Bookstore Recognizes TCTC Student

Doug Patrick a junior from Champion enrolled in the CADD Tech Prep Program at the Trumbull Career & Technical Center is not a professional writer, but he was paid for his talents. Recently, Doug was declared the winner in a reading/writing/ speak out contest sponsored by Border’s Book Stores. He received a $25 gift card as a prize

If students want their viewpoints taken seriously, it is essential to express them in a reasoned-well thought out manner. Doug took advantage of this opportunity.

After completing reading assignments on a topic of their choice, students were challenged to write a one page letter to a target audience [state representative, interest group, Congress etc] stating their concern about a specific issue.

Doug addressed his letter to the BP Energy Company headquartered in Houston Texas. He believes that the company should give long term consideration to the possibility of using Biodiesel as an alternative fuel source nationwide. Eventually, this could replace the use of fossil fuels.

Doug cited the advantages that include a cleaner environment, less dependence on imports, and a cheaper cost.  Biodiesal is produced from soybean which is a renewable source of energy. Doug suggested that the company phase in the transition by producing B20 which is a combination of fossil and alternative fuel.

In his letter, he noted that change is never easy or as quick as some would prefer it to be. Nevertheless, he hoped that a company as successful as BP would assume a leadership role in the process.

So if you see someone in the checkout line at Borders with books about alternative fuel, it just might be Doug Patrick. He will not be a shopper. Borders just made him a buyer.
