The Media Center at the TCTC- “Our Emerald City”
At the TCTC we have a Yellow Brick Road. It is a path students follow on their way to adventure, excitement and learning. It doesn’t have a scarecrow, lion or a tin man, but there are contests, games and research activities for everyone. The road leads directly into the library/media center of our school. We don’t have a wizard to orchestrate the journey, but we’re close. We have Paula Baco.
The names of the teachers who excel beyond the norm are never a mystery inside the walls of a school. They have earned the respect of their colleagues on the faculty. This is a story about one of these individuals, but she is a reluctant witness on her own behalf. She does not call attention to herself. In this instance, however, the members of the English Department at the Trumbull Career & Technical Center believe she is deserving of special recognition.
In the hands of a competent professional, the books, magazines, and on-line resources housed in a library are organized to promote the acquisition of knowledge. Working with other staff members, Paula Baco, has made the media center/library the hub of learning in our building.
To entice students to use the resources that are available, Baco has organized a variety of posters, contests, prizes, and activities that highlight the importance of reading, writing and research. As a result of her efforts, more books are checked out, more students are visiting, and more research activities are taking place.
Charmayne Polen co-chairs the Literacy Committee with Baco. She stated, “Paula has created a space where kids feel like going. She finds materials that are relevant, anticipates their needs, and is always available to help them. She does not have an off button.”
Melissa Sydlowski teaches Honors English for seniors. She credits Baco with turning back the clock for many students. “As kids grow older, some of them lose the excitement for books they possessed as children. Paula’s enthusiasm is contagious. I’ve watched juniors and seniors reconnect with the joy of reading.”
At the TCTC both junior and senior English classes are required to complete research papers. The staff is impressed with the selection of materials that Baco provides and her ability to work effectively with others. She encourages students to explore topics in greater detail.
In writing this story, it was important to learn why so many staff members were delighted to learn about Baco’s recognition. Not surprisingly, the reason was only partially connected with talent and skill. Patti Krivosh, the program instructor for the Career Path for the Teaching Profession, said it best. “ Paula has a passion for her job, but she has compassion for people. She is never harsh or judgmental. She is a very nice person.”
Entertainment venues such as arcades, dance clubs and movie theaters are natural attractions for teenagers. Education is a tougher sell because enjoyment is found at the end of the process not the beginning. Paula Baco has shortened the distance between these points for students.
In recognition of her professional excellence the Cracker Barrel Restaurant awarded Paula Baco a gift certificate redeemable for dinner for two people.
