“Neither rain nor sleet or dark of night will prevent the postman from completing his appointed rounds.” It sure helps, however, if the deliveries are made to a mailbox that is sturdy. For that reason, letters carriers everywhere would salute the efforts of the students in the Building Trades Program at the TCTC.
They have designed and constructed brick mailboxes according to specifications provided to them by their program teacher, John Cotton. This project allowed them to utilize the skills they have acquired in their lab.
Area contractors served as the judges for the contest and provided more than $200 worth of prizes for the event. The top three students in order were, Richard Biles, Greg Hinchman and Kalip Moon.
Building Trades is a two year program that provides students with the opportunity to learn the basic skills required for construction. They learn masonry and carpentry during their junior year by building the foundation and then constructing a model house with windows, doors, siding and roofing. During the senior year, modules are used to acquire plumbing and electrical skills.
Program completers in building trades are qualified for entry level careers as helpers and apprentices in areas of Bricklaying, Electricity, Plumbing and Carpentry. State certification in Building Trades is presented to qualified graduates.
