Cosmetology Hair Show Links School and Careers

Thank you-Dunkin Donuts on Youngstown Road in Warren for supplying refreshments for the event.
On Monday, October 16, makeup artists nail technicians, and hair stylists involved in the Cosmetology Industry shared their techniques with students enrolled in the Cosmetology Program at the TCTC. They demonstrated the latest fashions and styles that are popular in this career field. Many of the presenters are past program completers at the TCTC and are well-respected salon owners or business professionals.
The show provides the opportunity for students to meet potential employers and to receive first hand information about what it is like to work in the industry. The parents of the Cosmetology students are also invited to spend the day at school with their daughter. This event was the 10th consecutive year the show has been offered. The students look forward to the program because it provides a sneak preview to the career that awaits them after graduation from high school.
Cosmetology is a two-year program that provides students with the opportunity to learn and master various skills used in the beauty industry. Under the supervision of licensed instructors, students service clients during regular school hours, thus providing valuable experience in the profession.
Cheryl Cornich one of the program instructors discussed the advantage of enrolling as a high school student instead of waiting until after graduation. She said, “In addition to the tremendous cost savings, I got almost a two year start on building my clientele over friends who waited until after high school.”
Rosalyn Gault has worked for 14 years as an instructor in the program. She discussed the placement rate for program completers. She stated, “There are plenty of jobs available for qualified hair stylists. In addition to techniques and skills, we stress the importance of good interpersonal skills, attendance, appearance and a positive attitude.”
The seniors have an internship program where they go to area salons and are mentored by the professionals who work there. Gault stated, “This is a real life experience for many of our students. They see first hand the importance of what we have taught them in the lab. A few come away from the experience knowing this is not the career for them, but most of the students are energized. They can’t wait to get started.”
Bob Bonish, the program supervisor said one of the biggest strengths is the experience of the four instructors. “Each one of them has over 30 years in the profession. They do a great job of nurturing the students and building bridges with past graduates. These former students return as accomplished professionals to help the students.”
In the past five years, 93% of the students have passed the state boards which are required for certification. Two students have finished first in state competition and one placed 4th in the nation.
