“Let There Be Light”

Electrical Technology Students Use Program Skills to complete repairs

If you need to make repairs to a house or facility, these improvements are generally expensive. It helps to know professionals with expertise in their craft. When the horsebarn used by the Equine class at the TCTC required electrical renovations, we did not open our check book or consult the yellow page. Instead, we turned to students who are learning the necessary skills in their program area.

The Electrical Technology Senior Class completely wired the new offices and tackroom with lights, switches and receptacles. They also installed a new row of lights down the center of the barn to provide more light for grooming and security. After thes renovations were completed, the students installed a timer system to the lights over the horses that simulate the hours of daylight the animals need to maintain their summer coat of short hair. All of the wiring was done according to the National Electrical Code and was supervised my Mr. Dave Clegg, the Electrical Technology Instructor.

Electrical Technology is a two year program that teaches students the basics of construction, the use of tools, the fundamentals of electricity and basic knowledge of wiring. Upon completion of the two year program students qualify for entry level positions as electricians helpers, communication & cable technicians, security system technicians and appliance repair person. Careers that are available with further education include electrical technician and electrical engineer.

Giant Eagle on Mahoning Ave provided the students with donuts to recognize their service to the school.
